State School in Ruins
The Belchertown State School was an institution for the mentally
deficient, first established in 1922. It has a very controversial
history due to its poor treatment of patients and many reports of
physical and sexual abuse of the people in their care. It was finally
closed in 1992 once it became the target of a series of lawsuits.
