These are some old pictures of peasants who lived in the 19th-20th centuries in the Krasnoyarsk Region. Most of them were taken during an expedition to Yenisei Province in West Siberia, which began in 1911 under the direction of a museum worker. Its aim was to explore and photograph the culture and everyday life of the people who lived there.
This very picture was taken in 1916.

Supervisers’ job was to supervise the work and accept gold from the workers. This kind of shirt was very popular among miners of that time. High-heeled boots were in fashion in 1880-1890 too. A hat and a watch hanging on a chain or a string, were a luxury showing the status of their owner.

A running contest between a man and a horse, 1904.
The contest took place at one of the streets of the village. The pole marked the starting line. People in the background were supporters or just onlookers. The course was not too long and had a 180-degree-turn, allowing the man to win from time to time.

In the beginning of the 20th century, there was a big migration wave from western parts of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, to Siberia.
